Of the 100-plus cannabinoids in cannabis plants that cause psychoactive effects, the most bountiful is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Cannabidiol (CBD), the other most abundant cannabinoid, plays a complementary and key role in making a consumer high.

The amount of THC in a bud typically ranges from 12 to 20 percent. Growers today, though, are creating strains approaching 30 percent THC.
If you’re new to marijuana or experimenting with a novel strain, start with a bud with THC content at the low end of the range. Doing so ensures you won’t get overwhelmed by a strain’s potency at first.
Many vape cartridges contain much higher THC levels than buds: sometimes 80 percent or greater! Ask your budtender for recommendations.

CBD counteracts the euphoric effects of THC. So why bother to consider the CBD level when choosing a strain?
CBD is pivotal in articulating a strain’s unique high. It’s anxiety-reducing effects can mellow out and sustain the stoned experience.
Scientists also recognize CBD for its therapeutic effects, such as anti-convulsive, anti-spasmodic, antidepressant, anti-tumoral, and sedative.
Studies also have shown that CBD can contribute to brain health. Many people turn to CBD to relieve pain, reduce stress, and get better sleep – without experiencing the high.
Consider the balance of THC and CBD when choosing a product. CBD-rich products contain four percent  CBD or greater. As always, when shopping for a marijuana product, consult your budtender about a strain’s balance of THC and CBD.
